Woke Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson attempted to rebuke a reporter during a press conference on October 24, 2025, for using the term “illegal aliens” when asking about city spending. Johnson asserted, “We don’t have illegal aliens,” dismissing the phrase as a “science-fiction” term.
He equated the term “illegal aliens” to the historical legal term “slaves” used for Black people, highlighting its harmful implications. Specifically, Johnson questioned the reporter by saying, “The legal term for my people were slaves. You want me to use that term, too?”
The mayor described the language as “racist, nasty” and insisted on referring to people as “undocumented individuals that are human beings.” This confrontation took place alongside U.S. Rep. Pramila Jayapal, who supported Johnson’s stance by noting that immigration violations are civil, not criminal, offenses.
Separately, on October 15, 2025, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement arrested Radule Bojovic, a sworn police officer in the Chicago suburb of Hanover Park, for unlawfully residing in the country. Bojovic, a citizen of Montenegro, had overstayed a tourist visa that expired over a decade earlier in 2010.
The Hanover Park Police Department stated that Bojovic was hired legally in 2023 after passing a required background check and other vetting processes. ICE’s arrest of Bojovic was part of targeted enforcement operations in the Chicago area, unrelated to the mayor’s recent comments on terminology.
